Opportunities and Expansions

Last Saturday, I attended a local writer's conference. I didn't have a lot of expections, but I certainly got a lot out of it. Way to go Glendale Library!!!

During one of the breaks between lectures, I ventured past some of the tables where a lot of self-published authors were selling copies of their books. I came to a table held down by a growing organization that helps authors book public speaking gigs. BINGO! Just what I was looking for. It turns out that not only will this possibly be the chance to book some gigs, they are also talking with me about coaching others to improve their public speaking skills. How awesome is that?

The lectures at the conference were just as beneficial. One speaker talked about word counts, something I had not given a lot of thought to. It was suggested that I count the words on 10 pages of books in the same genre as mine, then use those numbers to calculate the total word count. I did this with about 5 similar books, all ended up with word counts between 60,000 and 75,000 words.

So how did my book compare? I packed in a whopping 44,000 words. Yikes! I guess I need to add more content. Back to the manuscript!

Peas and hominy,
